Symbols of Ecuador: representations of our cultural identity

The Íconos bajo la Piel project meticulously documented and systematized Ecuador’s rich tradition of symbols, preserving the artistic legacy embedded in the handicrafts of its ancestral cultures.

Iconography and symbolism in Ecuador’s indigenous cultures

The Sinchi Sacha Foundation and the Mindalae Museum, with the support of the European Union, have researched and identified the most emblematic iconographies of Ecuador’s ancestral northern Andean region.

Ecuador is a multicultural country with a rich artistic and artisanal tradition that reflects both its cultural and natural diversity. Through this research, 2,500 symbolic representations from 14 cultural regions across the country have been cataloged, showcasing the deep connection between craftsmanship and heritage.

Symbols of Ecuador in handicrafts: a legacy of ancestral iconography

Ecuadorian handicrafts are more than just decorative pieces—they are vessels of ancestral iconography, preserving the artistic heritage of indigenous cultures. Each symbol, meticulously crafted into ceramics, textiles, and other traditional art forms, tells a story of identity, spirituality, and the deep connection between Ecuador’s people and nature.

In ancient societies without written language, visual symbols and oral tradition were the primary means of communication. These artistic expressions, passed down for generations, continue to enrich Ecuador’s cultural identity, offering a glimpse into the beliefs and wisdom of its indigenous peoples.
